reach across the aisle, he has been able to compromise, in fact he even appointed people to his clintonmoo appointed h t h t. hillary clinton was not here for the speech. she certainly got a round of applause there. the democrats know they need president obama, they need president clinton to help president obama. he remind americans of a better time and can help undecided voters who haven't been convinced to go or tot rmney >> that's certainly the image that they wanted. very telling that the president was not in the arena for the first lady's speech. did show up and hit the stage for president clinton's speech. very telling. they wanted that image last night. what do we expect from mr. obama tonight? >> tonight is going to look a lot different than we expected and it's certainly going to look different than in 2008. remember the crowd in denver was huge. outside. beautiful stage. beautiful scenery. democrats say, yeah, we had to move it inside because there was just that threat of rain. so it will be a lot less people. but if tonight was any indication it is going to be a fired up crowd. they love president clinton. they're going to certainly love president obama. >> thank you to abc's karen travers reporting live for us this morning from charlotte. thanks. don't miss the president's speech and all political analysis during abc news live

coverage tonight. once again, diane sawyer, and george stephanopoulos host the big event at 10:00 eastern. well, they called it a home-going celebration of an extraordinary life. lucimarian roberts, mother of abc's robin roberts, has been laid to rest. hundreds of people packed the church to pay respect to mrs. roberts. the first african-american to head the mississippi state board of education. robin and her three siblings thanked everyone there. diane sawyer making the trip as well. their mother was buried next to her husband. a former tuskegee airman who died in 2004. >> sending love and prayers to the family. in other news, in los angeles, police are trying to unravel a bizarre bank heist. two men in ski masks, kidnapped the bank manager and strapped a bomb to her midsection. abc's nick watt was there. >> reporter: east los angeles, 0830, the drama begins to

unfold. the manager of bank of america, see her there, carefully walking out of the bank after telling her staff there is a bomb strapped to her stomach. >> she was told it was explosives. she was ordered to go into the bank. take out all the money. >> reporter: she told police the robbers kidnapped her and forced her to play that terrifying part in their audacious heist. this whole city block is shut down. right there on the low-loader, the bank manager's car being taken away for further investigation. the bank manager herself is being questioned by the fbi. the bomb squad using a robot to detonate the device. it is still unclear whether it was genuine or fake. there are echoes of the fatal robbery in pennsylvania in 2003 when a pizza delivery guy walked into a bank with a pipe bomb strapped to his neck and walked out with $8,700. the bomb later exploded killing him. unclear whether he was in on the plot. the bank manager says she feared for her life and just did exactly as she was told. >> she took the money out of the bank and threw it out the door

to the bank robbers. >> two bank robbers who never set foot inside the building escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. nick watt, abc news, los angeles. well, aftershocks continue in costa rica after a powerful earthquake shook the country. the 7.6 quake caused one death and minor damage. yesterday, the quake was 25 miles underground. deeper quakes are usually widely felt but cause less damage. a week after making landfall in louisiana, isaac may spring back to life in the gulf. a broken-off remnant, the storm could regenerate into a tropical system over the next few days and may get a new name as well. that means more downpours and flash flooding for the gulf coast. weather news continues, hurricane leslie making its way to bermuda, forecast to hit the island as a pretty strong category 2 storm. leslie will kick up waves as high as eight feet.

i will use lighter ingredients, bet r for you, good for you. it's mexican. we have to start off with tequila, of course. that's what we have to do. >> tequila. >> found this one, el jimador, tequila, number one in mexico. they know good tequila, 100% blue agave. in my fix -- mixing jar, i'm going to put about three cucumber slices, diced up, jimmy's cucumber smash. two ounces of tequila. muddle this up to get the flavor of the cucumber out. give it a smash. for a sweetener, little agave nectar. which you can find at all the stores. >> hugely popular, agave. >> three-fourths of an ounce of that goes in. juice of one lime about an ounce and a half. that goes in. give this a nice little shake. with my ice. then rob, a nice little serving tip. going to put these in a hollowed

out cucumber cup. how's that? >> always thinking. hollow out a cucumber and use it as a cocktail holder. that's brilliant. >> that goes in. nice. light, refreshing. rob, i left the tequila out of yours. >> it's not fun. a first for me. let's go for it. >> cheers. >> that is really good. and taste that cucumber. the freshness. >> cucumber comes out. uh-huh. >> really good. >> way to kick off your fiesta. right there. >> creative. i'm going to hold on to my cucumber. >> tell you about this incredible appetizer, light, refreshing. ground turkey i have cooked off. 99% fat free. brown rice goes in. salsa. cheese. bake that in the oven. goes in a little jalapeno half. and goes in, 350, 400, 20 minutes. done. >> a little popper? >> absolutely. healthy light. i love this. this corn salsa is delicious. you can use this as a side dish or actually with chips. how easy to make it. basically olive oil goes in. 2 tablespoons of that. 2 tablespoons tequila. just a little tequila in there

to give it the boom. the boom. fresh lime juice. 2 tablespoons of that. little sweetener, 2 tablespoons agave. maybe a little bit of garlic if you like that. salt, pepper. done. whisk this up. goes into cooked corn. i added fresh diced red bell pepper. >> nice touch. >> goes in. give it a toss. maybe put some cilantro down. here's what it looks like. finished side dish. >> quick, easy, light, refreshing. >> gives the corn pop and flavor. >> you bet. i set out a fajita station. again, light, healthy. little grilled chicken breast right here. >> beautiful. >> little mexican seasoning. on top of that. fresh veggies, whole wheat wrap. that goes in. again -- light, good for you. >> and the yogurt here. >> and fat free yogurt instead of sour cream. dessert, this is a fun, easy, great dessert. >> look so good. >> yeah, these are delicious. flour tortilla, put a little apple pie filling on top. >> beautiful. >> roll these up.

hours ago, it was electric in here. bill clinton brought down the house. he said the choice for voters is clear. only president obama can keep the country moving in the right direction. ♪ yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone ♪ >> reporter: after a rock star welcome, former president bill clinton made his case for president obama who watched the speech from inside the arena. >> i want to nominate a man who is cool on the outside. [ cheers ] but who burns for america on the inside. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: while republicans say the president has failed to fix the economy, clinton said it's not that simple. >> he inherited a deeply damaged economy. he put a floor under the crash. he began the long, hard road to recovery and laid the foundation for a modern, more well-balanced economy that will produce millions of good new jobs. >> reporter: a message aimed squarely at those

middle-of-the-road voters who are disappointed in president obama but still haven't committed to romney. president obama and clinton have had a rocky history. they clashed during the 2008 democratic primary race. but with the president's popularity ratings the lowest preconvention for any incumbent since the 1980s, the obama campaign knows the big impact that clinton could have. >> bill clinton loves to be needed as much as he needs to be loved. he is really needed by barack obama right now. >> reporter: president obama will make his sales pitch to voters right here in this arena. that was not the original plan of course, rob and paula, he was supposed to do it outside. but because of weather concerns, democrats decided to move it inside this arena. they say they will not let that rain on their parade. >> a lot of folks thought they were going to hear the president that won't be allowed in because it doesn't seat as many people. did bill, the big dog do his job in his speech last night, karen? >> wow, rob, paula. he had people hooting, hollering here. everybody was on their feet. he really got the crowd revved up. this was also a well-crafted speech. he used humor. he used a couple anecdotes.

and it was very folksy. like you said earlier, very vintage clinton. this was also a very direct response to the republican criticisms over the last couple of months. he took the romney/ryan ticket on directly. talked about his administration and the prosperity of the '90s. he didn't overshadow the president. that's always the risk with bill clinton. when he starts talking he can keep talking and keep talking, as he did, and that overshadows president obama, the main man for this week. he didn't do that tonight. there was one great line we didn't mention in our piece. he said, president obama has ability to reach out across the eel to reach out to rivals. he said, look, he appointed people to his cabinet that supported hillary clinton in the primaries. he said, heck, he even appointed hillary clinton to his cabinet. the crowd went nuts. hillary clinton is not here, she's traveling abroad. they all loved it. bet you could hear the cheering over there in asia. >> bill clinton made the point about republican obstructionism in congress, as another factor,

when he made his whole point about bipartisanship. also he had to tackle the big issue of whether the americans and the country are better off than four years ago. how did he delve into that last night? >> rob, he asked that question directly. before he answered it, he let the crowd answer it. everybody started cheering. are you better off today than four years ago? they went nuts. a resounding yes. he went through bullet points of the policy issues. president obama invested in america, infrastructure, education, resources. that helped america be better off now than it was foryour yea ago. he said the health care law. that is an important factor to consider whether or not you're better off than you were four years ago. he said, look, things aren't great. but no president could have come in and fixed that dismal economy in just four years. that's why you need to give president obama four more years to do it. and it was a very strong case. and you really got the crowd into that. rather than answering it himself. he said, i'm going to put that question to you.

and man, did they give him a resounding yes. >> he certainly enjoys the elder statesman status that he has. last night making the case. karen travers live for us this morning. thank you, karen. enjoy our political discussion on our facebook page. it has been very active since last night's speech as it always is during an election year. check out wnnfans.com. let us know what you think. the most controversial part of arizona's tough new immigration law can now be enforced after a judge's ruling. that means police in the state will be required to check the immigration status of people stopped for other possible crimes. civil rights groups had argued that doing so would amount to racial profiling. a sad story from hawaii where an australian tourist has been sentenced to probation in connection with the death of a teenage girl. tyson dagley was not paying attention riding a jet ski last month and that's when he slammed right into the 16-year-old girl who later died. dagley pleaded no contest to a charge of third-degree negligent

homicide. >> i'm not looking for justice. i'm not trying to make this guy suffer. but i need for him to understand there is a consequence to every decision we make. >> she also says she has forgiven dagley, that's what she believes her daughter would have wanted. he must pay $78,000 in restitution. his record could be wiped clean in just a year. moving on now to the storm that just wouldn't go away. a broken off remnant of isaac is now making a second appearance in the gulf of mexico. the disturbance, nicknamed the spawn of isaac, could organize into a new system over the next couple days and get a new name. that could mean downpours, flash flooding from louisiana to the florida panhandle. and hurricane leslie is still creeping through the atlantic this morning, heading to bermuda. it's packing 75-mile-an-hour winds on track to make landfall over the weekend as a cat 2

storm. leslie not expected to hit the u.s. michael became the seventh hurricane of the season, but no threat to land. a relatively light year for tornados, but we have seen dozens of twisters in the past week alone. we have isaac to blame for that. abc's sam champion has more. >> reporter: remnants of hurricane isaac are dumping rain, 9 inches in the past 24 hours in new jersey. and spawning twisters. this is cell phone video of a funnel cloud forming in cherry hill, new jersey. isaac has been a tornadomaker since its landfall. this one, in gulf port, mississippi. and has left a trail of twisters for days as far north at arkansas, missouri, and illinois. but even with all of isaac's action, it has been a surprisingly light summer for tornadoes. the severe storms laboratory in norman, oklahoma now saying it is the quietest year since the 1950s. and this summer's crippling dome of heat and drought are the reason. no rain means no storms.

welcome back. it has been the elephant in the room for years. concerns about severe and long-term head trauma in nfl players. >> now a new study involving thousands of retired players shows death rates from brain disease are far higher than that

of the general population. here is abc's chris cuomo. >> reporter: it is a sport derived from warfare that is all about violence. "espn sports science" says crushing blows like this can be the force equivalent of a sledgehammer blow to the head. one study found the average player takes 900 to 1,500 head shots a season. we all know what happens out here on the football field. the pass is thrown, a player makes a catch, a couple of quick moves, then the explosive collision that makes the crowd go wild. but what we are learning abut what happens to the players once they leave this field may be even more shocking. the study find former football players suffer a higher risk of death from brain-related diseases. four times more likely to die of alzheimer's disease or als than the general population. >> there is a possibility even high school football players who have experienced more than one traumatic brain injury might be at risk for developing neurodegeneration later in life. >> reporter: the rate of death

varies dramatically by the player's position. quarterbacks and running backs at higher speeds were three times more likely to die from a disease from damage to the brain than less dynamic players, such as linemen. the nfl announced they're donating $30 million to fund research into brain injuries and other medical issues. for all the research, the most pressing question for families sending kids out on to the field this fall is one without an answer. how can players be protected from the violence that is central to the game they play? chris cuomo, abc news, new york. >> in this study from the journal neurology, they looked at death certificates. of 3400 former nfl players with at least five years' experience between 1959 and 1988. it can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy. cte. it's a condition that chris henry, a former bengal, never had a concussion. but upon his death, they found cte. players have to look out.

the appeal to white, working-class voters. the president has seen support among the group dip. clinton was there to kind of win them back and remind them of the good economic times when he was in office. that's why you saw the president get out there. he wasn't in charlotte to kiss the wife after the speech. but he was there to hug bill clinton tonight, because they wanted that image of saying, look, here's bill clinton. here's barack. try to link the two. and win over voters. that is a very important image. the picture they want to see on front pages today. >> there was a little discord within the democratic party earlier in the day. one of the chairs admitted when they had to introduce god and jerusalem back into the platform. there was a little bit of booing. debbie wasserman shultz said there wasn't any sort of dispute. and cnn's anderson cooper, an alum here on "wnn," said she was living an alternate reality. but they even admitted there was a bit of an unfortunate stumble. but seemingly, that is all over now. >> both parties have had platform issues.

reasons took a hit, because they adopted a platform that says ban on gay marriage, ban on abortion in all cases here. both parties have had, you know, planks in the platform to defend. democrats after the controversy corrected theirs. we will see how it proceed. >> we will. >> we will. and moving on, there were other speakers before the former president took command of the stage. sandra fluke, a women's health care advocate warned mitt romney would not stand up to extreme elements of the republican party. massachusetts senate accounted elizabeth warren said the president gets the middle-class. earlier abc's david muir spoke exclusively to caroline kennedy. >> one of the interesting things i saw on the campaign trail this year were so many people who had voted for my father in 1960 for the first time were out there again this year. and talking about president obama. and just as committed as ever. >> now get this. it's the first democratic

convention since 1944 which does not include an elected member of the kennedy family. republican vice presidential nominee paul ryan supports prayer in public schools if approved by the states. ryan says it is a constitutional issue for states and a moral responsibility of parents. it is not clear whether mitt romney agrees with ryan's position on that issue of prayer in schools. >> ah, the separation of church and state. >> always a hot debate. >> always a very hot debate. let's just not go there. may get in trouble. >> another hot debate is the abortion issue. and a moment that didn't get a lot of primetime coverage last night. spoke before the networks joined in, you may remember the name sandra fluke, the name from the rush limbaugh controversy. we saw her advocating for coverage of birth control. she gave a pretty biting speech. one of the lines talks about what america would be like under president romney. an america in which access to birth control is controlled by people who will never use it. politicians redefine rape so survivors are victimized all

over again. got the crowd whipped up. the women's vote is so critical. moments like that, despite lack of primetime coverage, issues, voters still have to wrestle with. >> they will. and arizona is one step closer to implementing the most controversial part of the immigration law. a federal judge refused to block the so called "show me your papers" provision that requires police officers to ask about the immigration status of people who are stopped for other suspected crimes. civil groups argued that provision amounts to racial profiling. a man in florida was arrested outside a movie theater while dressed as the joker. police say christopher sydes was taken into custody because of an outstanding warrant in a drug case, not because of how he was dressed. there was no connection to the auro aurora, colorado, theater massacre. sydes never threatened anyone, he has a history of mental issues, and several previous

arrests. an ohio teenager alive and well after a dramatic underground water rescue. 14-year-old jeff laporta was riding his bike near cleveland when he fell into a creek and got sucked into a storm drain. his friend ran for help. the water carried him 1,500 feet. rescuers assumed they would be recovering the 8th grader's body. when they called his name through a manhole he answered. >> it was dark. it was scary. it was nasty. it was like somebody was like -- putting you in a big whirlpool and -- and spinning you around and getting your head knocked on the wall and stuff. >> laporta said he thought he was going to die. amazingly suffered a few cuts and bruises. lucky kid. >> very lucky kid. claustrophobic person's worst nightmare. >> no kidding. here's your thursday forecast, everybody. heavy rain from lingering remnants of isaac. can't believe we're still talking about this storm, some of the effects being felt along
